A stunning oil on canvas, this artwork beautifully captures the essence of the Sinulog festival, blending vibrant hues and dynamic movement. The central figure, adorned in rich attire, holds the Santo Niño with reverence, surrounded by intricate golden patterns that symbolize the spiritual energy of the celebration. The deep red background contrasts with the soft blues and golds, evoking a sense of devotion, cultural heritage, and the unity of faith. Paul C. Balan is a Filipino-American artist and the first Filipino and Asian coin designer for the United States Mint. Born in Paete, Laguna, Philippines, a town known for its rich artistic heritage, he studied Fine Arts at the University of Santo Tomas before migrating to the U.S. in 2002. His dedication led him to join the United States Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program in 2008, where his designs have been featured in various U.S. coin series, including America the Beautiful, as well as prestigious Congressional programs. Balan’s art bridges traditional Filipino and contemporary Western influences, reflecting themes of faith, spirituality, and cultural identity.
