Joe Datuin

Joe Datuin (b. May 7, 1956, Dagupan City, Philippines) is a world-renowned Filipino contemporary visual artist, Olympian, and monumentalist. He gained international recognition after winning the Grand Prize in the 2008 International Olympic Committee (IOC) Sport and Art Contest (Sculpture Category) in Lausanne, Switzerland. This event coincided with the 2008 Beijing Olympics and included entries from 35 countries. In addition, he became a nominee for the Order of National Artist of the Philippines in 2018. Education and Early Recognition Datuin earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the University of Santo Tomas in 1977. During his studies, he received the Benavides Award. Later, in 2008, the university honored him with The Outstanding Thomasian Alumni (TOTAL) Award. In 2002, he joined the Vermont Studio Center in the USA as an artist-in-residence. This opportunity expanded his artistic exposure and strengthened his international connections. Awards and Honors Throughout his career, Datuin received numerous prestigious recognitions. In 2009, the Philippine President awarded him the Ani ng Dangal Award for excellence in visual arts. A year later, the City of Manila honored him with the Patnubay sa Kalinangan Award for Sculpture. In 2011, he received The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) Award from the Jaycees Senate. Moreover, in 2012, the City of Dagupan recognized him as an Outstanding Pangasinense and Dagupeno. Earlier, in 2003, he received the Gawad President Manuel L. Quezon Award for Art and Culture. Major Works and Public Art Datuin gained renown for his monumental works. Notably, he created four mosaic murals at Luneta Park. He also produced large-scale sculptures, including the iconic Dancing Rings, inspired by his Olympic-winning masterpiece. Several institutions commissioned his works. For instance, Campeone (2011) stands at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion. Meanwhile, I Love You (2009) appears as a mural triptych at the Philippine Heart Center. In addition, the sculpture No. 1 (2019) stands at the House of Representatives grounds. Exhibitions and International Presence Since his first solo exhibition in 1977, Datuin has exhibited extensively. His works appear in galleries, museums, and international biennales across Asia, Europe, and North America. He has participated in major international exhibitions. These include the Water for Life International Art Exhibition at the Niagara Falls History Museum in Canada (2024). He also joined the Florence Biennale in Italy in 2015, 2016, and 2025. Furthermore, he participated in the Anima Mundi International Art Festival in Venice (2017). His work also appeared in In Reverie of Form at Agora Gallery in New York (2015). In addition, he exhibited at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Collections and Legacy Today, Datuin’s works form part of important collections. In the Philippines, institutions such as the National Museum and GSIS Museo ng Sining house his pieces. Internationally, the IOC Olympic Museum in Lausanne also features his work. Through his large-scale sculptures and global exhibitions, Joe Datuin continues to represent Filipino artistry on the world stage. His work reflects excellence, innovation, and national pride.

John Perry Pellejera A self-thought artist from Taytay, Rizal whose passion in visual arts can be seen through his paintings. Jonathan Capiral Jalac (b.1980, Lopez, Quezon) is a self-taught artist and a License Professional Teacher. He is a graduate of AB in Philosophy, Minor in Education at Oblates of St. Joseph College Seminary in Lipa, Batangas. His journey in creating artworks began during his elementary days in Alabang Muntinlupa city where he spent his childhood, and he honed his skills through joining different visual art competitions and group exhibitions. He strongly believes that while his creativity is a gift from God, his artistic savvy is a product of hard work and a never- say die attitude to be the best that he can be.
